This post is all about how to keep chickens cool in the summer.
How to Keep Chickens Cool | Why It’s So Important
As someone who keeps chickens on the tropical island of Puerto Rico, keeping my chickens cool and comfortable is literally always on my mind! Chickens cannot sweat they rely on cooling themselves through their comb, wattles, and legs. I absolutely love my beautiful Orpington chickens, but the heavier and fluffier the birds, the harder it is for them to cool themselves with all those dense feathers!
Can chickens overheat and can chickens die from heat? Sadly, yes. This is why it is vital to keep an eye on your flock in the high temperatures as generally, chickens have a much harder time cooling themselves as opposed to keeping themselves warm in the winter. If you notice your birds are acting listless, lying down, or acting strange, you’ll need to take immediate action.
Because my chickens struggle in the hot and humid summers here in Puerto Rico, I’ve found many ways of keeping my flock cool and comfortable so they do not get to the point of heat stroke.

Keep Cool Chickens: Providing Shade and Shelter
A happy chicken is a cool chicken! Shade, shelter, and a cool breeze can help keep your flock chilling on those hot summer days.
1. Shelter
Having shelter is so important when it comes to keeping your chickens cool and out of the scorching summer sun. If you don’t have any natural shade trees in your chicken area, consider planting an established tree, large shrubs, or adding covered runs by using shade cloths, tarps, umbrellas, or even strategically placed branches. This allows them to escape the blazing sun and relax in cooler spots. Something I am doing this year is planting a Moringa tree in the chicken run as it is a fast growing tree, the leaves have health benefits for the chickens (and people!), and the entire tree is non-toxic to them.
If your chicken coop is raised, the area underneath can provide a nice shady area for your chickens to hang out. But don’t forget about the coop needing to stay cool too! This is where deep shade can come in.
2. Create Deep Shade
Deep shade can also be very beneficial to cooling an area down even more. For example, if you have a shady area below a tree, adding a shade cloth, run, or another form of shade can make a big impact in cooling your area down.
In my run, I have a large shade tree and then a barn roof underneath that. I keep all of my chicken’s food and water under this area as it stays the coolest area in their run.
Don’t forget to keep your coop cool too! Placing the chicken coop under a shade tree or in an area that gets shade can help keep your coop cool. Your chickens will be in and out using their nesting boxes and of course, roosting come nightfall. Keep it a nice cool place for them by ensuring this stays cool throughout the day.
3. Breeze, Please
Nothing beats a gentle breeze on a scorching summer day, right? Well, your chickens agree! Help them beat the heat by strategically placing fans in their coop and or run.
Ensuring these fans are positioned safely out of reach and shielded from moisture is crucial. Plus, keeping them clean prevents dust buildup.
When it comes to fan selection, opt for models specifically designed for outdoor use to avoid any potential hazards. And remember, box fans aren’t suitable for outdoor settings due to fire risks.
Consider placing fans near their eating and drinking area for a refreshing break during mealtime. And inside the coop, running fans 24/7 during hot spells can make a world of difference. I even face one of the coop fans towards the nesting boxes so that they are getting air flow while they sit and lay their eggs.
Your chickens will appreciate the cool breeze during those scorching summer days. It’s a simple solution that ensures their comfort and well-being throughout the season.

Beat the Heat: Innovative Ways to Keep Chickens Cool in the Summer
When the temperature climbs and the sun beats down, even my chickens, despite their shady spots and gentle breezes, feel the heat. That’s when I know it’s time to ramp up their cooldown routine. So, how can you keep chickens cool in 100-degree weather, especially when you’ve already provided ample shade and airflow?
4. Splash Zone
Who says only people get to enjoy dipping their toes in the pool? Chickens love a good splash too! Provide a shallow dish (I use a very large baking dish with high sides) or kiddie pool filled with cool water for them to walk around in. Not only does it help lower their body temperature, but it also adds a fun element to their day! You can even add some bricks in for them to stand on as the bricks will absorb the cool water and give them another area to sand on. Just remember, chickens cannot swim so make sure they can easily get in and out and just enough water to cover their feet to avoid any chicken pool parties gone wrong.
Another option can be adding a mister. Installing a mister can be a game-changer in keeping your flock cool and comfortable during scorching summer days. As the fine mist gently settles over the ground, it lowers the surrounding temperature, providing much-needed relief from the heat. Last year I added a misting fan into the feed area and my flock loves it!
5. Frozen Treats
Make your chickens a cool treat for that hot summer day! I love to bring my chickens a bowl of ice and berries to toss in their wading tray. For my chickens it encourages them to not only walk through their water tray to cool down their feet but they are drink more water when they bob for their berries and melted ice!
You can also chill watermelon and give it to your chickens for an extra treat. Not only will they love the cool water melon but it will help them stay hydrated with all that water content. It’s a tasty way to keep them hydrated and entertained!

6. Hydration Station
Staying hydrated is vital to staying safe in the heat, and chickens are no exception. Ensure they have access to fresh, cool, and clean water at all times. It is important to keep your water in the shade as well!
Consider adding electrolytes to their water to replenish any lost minerals due to the heat around once a week, dependent on the supplement you choose. And don’t forget to check and refill their waterers regularly.
7. Dust Bath
Chickens love nothing more than a good dust bath, especially when it’s hot out when they can dig deep into the cool soil.
Provide them with a designated dust bathing area under shade. Not only does it help keep them cool, but it also helps control pests and keeps their feathers in tip-top condition.
