Backyard Chicken Keeping for Happy, Healthy, and Friendly Chickens

About

Meet Me and The Chickens of TropicalChicki

Jessica Stewart TropicalChicki

Hello! I’m Jessica, a backyard chicken keeper living in Northern California. On my farm with my husband I have 21 super friendly chickens that are my inspiration for this site.

I found the love of chickens when I moved to Puerto Rico many years ago. I never would of guessed that the best thing about island life would be finding the love of chickens and sharing them with the world. Chickens have truly changed my life for the better and I hope that everyone one day will get to know the love of a chicken.

I believe chickens can be just as affectionate as our beloved cats and dogs. By sharing my experiences here and I hope to inspire others to feel confident about keeping chickens.

I hope to raise awareness about how intelligent chickens truly are and to contribute to improving their treatment. Chickens deserve higher ethical care standards, far beyond what they currently receive in factory farms. Every person who chooses to raise their own backyard chickens, providing eggs for themselves, their family, and friends, helps reduce the number of chickens subjected to these harsh conditions.

My Mission

I have two main goals when sharing my experiences and all I have learned from my chickens.

To help others feel confident about raising happy, healthy, and super friendly chickens so that they too, can know the love of a chicken.

To advocate for better treatment standards for both hens and roosters, contributing to meaningful change in how chickens are cared for.

Every chicken is a special chicken! I love highlighting the different personalities of all of my chickens. These sweet chickens are what inspired me to start this site in order to share what Iโ€™ve learned and spread the joy that chickens can bring.

Chickens Who Have Crossed the Rainbow Bridge

Shimmer was such a sweet little lady. She loved hanging out with her besties Viper and Doughi. She would cuddle up with them on my lap for evening pets and she had the sweetest chatter. She will forever be missed.

Vixen has been a super snuggle bug and gets so excited to be picked up. Last night she was jumping up and down as I unlocked the run door (Iโ€™m so sad my camera didnโ€™t catch it).

Now Violet is asking for pickups too ๐Ÿค—

They have a few weeks still will in quarantine until they start their integration and meet their new friends where they will know love for forever ๐Ÿ’ž

Meet the 2 new rescue Orps Violet and Vixen ๐Ÿ’› We Meet the 2 new rescue Orps Violet and Vixen ๐Ÿ’›

We chose two V names as a tribute to my sweet Viper who passed earlier this month. I miss her every day and I know she would want more chickens to have better lives and to be safe and loved ๐Ÿฅน

These girls were found after being abandoned, which is always hard for me to understand. In the states there are so many predators that chickens simply cannot protect themselves once they are left on their own.

Chickens truly make wonderful pets and I love seeing people discover the joy of keeping them, but they do require care, planning, and long term commitment.

Today will be the girls first full day being out in the run. They are going to be quarantined for a few weeks before starting to integrate into the flock. For now Helios continues to watch the new girls from afar ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ’ž
