Backyard Chicken Keeping for Happy, Healthy, and Friendly Chickens

About

Meet Me and The Chickens of TropicalChicki

Jessica Stewart TropicalChicki

Hello! I’m Jessica, a backyard chicken keeper living in Northern California. On my farm with my husband I have 21 super friendly chickens that are my inspiration for this site.

I found the love of chickens when I moved to Puerto Rico many years ago. I never would of guessed that the best thing about island life would be finding the love of chickens and sharing them with the world. Chickens have truly changed my life for the better and I hope that everyone one day will get to know the love of a chicken.

I believe chickens can be just as affectionate as our beloved cats and dogs. By sharing my experiences here and I hope to inspire others to feel confident about keeping chickens.

I hope to raise awareness about how intelligent chickens truly are and to contribute to improving their treatment. Chickens deserve higher ethical care standards, far beyond what they currently receive in factory farms. Every person who chooses to raise their own backyard chickens, providing eggs for themselves, their family, and friends, helps reduce the number of chickens subjected to these harsh conditions.

My Mission

I have two main goals when sharing my experiences and all I have learned from my chickens.

To help others feel confident about raising happy, healthy, and super friendly chickens so that they too, can know the love of a chicken.

To advocate for better treatment standards for both hens and roosters, contributing to meaningful change in how chickens are cared for.

Chickens Who Have Crossed the Rainbow Bridge

Shimmer was such a sweet little lady. She loved hanging out with her besties Viper and Doughi. She would cuddle up with them on my lap for evening pets and she had the sweetest chatter. She will forever be missed.

This little guy 😍 I mean how cute is he? He’s been coming over closer and closer as I sit in the run and now for the past 3 nights I’ve been able to scoop him up for some before bedtime snuggles.

He’s loving sleeping on the roost now at night with his two girls and I absolutely love seeing how happy he is 🥰

Chicki is still inside getting treated for her eye injury and so Butter formed a rescue mission. Did they get distracted by treats, maybe 😅

What to do with too many roosters 🐓❤️ It’s chick What to do with too many roosters 🐓❤️

It’s chick season and I’m so surprised to see there isn’t a disclaimer on the cute little chicks sold at the local TSC that a sexed chick is at best, only around 80% accurate. That means 20% will be boys and if you get a sweet boy, you’re going to need to have some ideas on how to keep them. So whether this will be your second or third rooster or your first, here’s some ideas!

1. Keep them in the flock ❤️ It isn’t an automatic given that having more than one rooster in the flock will end badly. They can coexist when given the opportunity and the best possible setup to keep the peace (lots of space, enough hens, multiple feeders/waters, etc.). Butter has accepted two rescue roosters, Moonbeam and Helios and they all get along and work together as a rooster team to protect the flock.

2. Start a Bachelor flock. Yup, the boys can exist with other boys in their very own bachelor pad! There’s a lot of great resources out here for setting up a bachelor coop and I’m always happy to share resources!

3. Keep a house rooster. Usually if there are issues with keeping a rooster it’s due to noise so keeping them inside can be an option. And yes, there’s chicken diapers out there for just this very thing! There’s lots of fun chicken accounts who show off their super cute house roos.

But please whatever you do, don’t dump your roosters. You wouldn’t do that to your cats or dogs just because they are a boy, right? When we take on an animal we are committing to their care and well being and that shouldn’t stop just because they turn out to be a rooster. If you absolutely have to rehome try going through trusted chicken friends to see who may be able to take in a rooster where they won’t be harmed ❤️
